As you head to the polls on Tuesday to help Obama usher in hope and change, consider these words from Massachusetts Congressman Barney Frank:
I think at this point there needs to be a focus on an immediate increase in spending and I think this is a time when deficit fear has to take a second seat….I believe later on there should be tax increases.
And who’s gonna stop him?
Just a quick note on this “liberal” idea of taxes. It is more just to taxes and spend than to borrow and spend and put the debt on the next generation. 40 years ago conservatives in the republican party were a great party to follow, now we have something that resembles neither liberal or conservative in the republican party.
I wonder with the failure to get that one last justice to overturn Roe v Wade will the social conservatives stop looking to government as it’s God on social changes and actually follow Jesus’ directive in the gospels of changing hearts and minds? Once I realized that Roe v Wade could do nothing for the law but put it back in the states hands I realized how moot of a point it was and how awful it is to use that issue as a political wedge. Congrats to Obama, social conservatives, follow who you say you do and stop looking for government to solve your ills and start contibuting to a healthy society. Shine your light before men and show your good works that they may glorify your God in heaven. 😉

In other words, you are against private property? Just want to be clear. Second, Barney Frank does not represent me. He represents the 4th Congressional District Of Massachusetts and if that is who they want, so be it, but it does not mean that I have to agree with his stance. I just happen to understand that the results of taxing the rich to make things more equitable does not raise anyones standard of living. In fact it causes more social problems than it could ever solve.
Besides, if you personally were to make 500k per year and the government were to take over half of it in taxes, how does that benefit anyone? It makes more sense to me to remove the restraints of excessive taxation and give more people the opportunity to succeed. All class envy does is suppress incentive to reach for more than you already have and it causes us to abdicate responsibility for our own lives.
When we take responsibility for our own lives, we then have the ability to respond to the trials that come to all of us. Also, the fact that the government has started taking responsibility for us just means that no one will ever be satisfied with what we have because there is not enough resources to go around if there is no incentive to create them. It also takes away the incentive for the Church to be a means of charity in the community, since the government has taken that responsibility. This is actually what Thomas Jefferson meant in his letter to the Danbury Baptist Association when he coined the term the separation of Church and State. He meant that the Church has it’s responsibilities and the State has it’s own and that the two should not assume the other’s role. this does not mean that a person’s religious belief should not have a bearing on the way he governs. It absolutely should. It just means that the Church is better at charity and the State is better at protecting it citizens.
Personally, I know that God will see His purpose through all of this and this may just be Him sending a delusion among the electorate and allowing us to have what we want, even when it will destroy our economy. Socialism, when fully tried, has always led to tyranny and if the Democrats get full control of the Presidency and super majorities in both houses, that is what we are headed for. And since that is what we voted in, that is what we deserve. Fortunately, my hope is not based in governmental systems and outcomes of elections, my hope is in the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and His death and resurrection.
As I have told Jeff here on the blog many times, my goal is not to be snarky. My goal is always to present my core beliefs in a way that recognizes that even when I have a difference of opinion with a person, they still have value in the conversation and deserve a respectful response. It is my prayer that this falls into that category.

I’m so liberal I’m barely a Democrat, so yeah, I’d like Barney Frank and his ‘ilk’ (also known as the elected representatives of the people of this country) to govern us as he says he will. I’ve got no problem with that. What makes you think I would? Is it that hard to believe that other people sincerely hold political opinions different to your own?
The problem with Republican rule wasn’t that they spent money, it was that they wasted it on boondoggles like the Iraq war and the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Support Act. I think the Dems will spend the money on more sensible programs, like putting the economy back on track, improving our infrastructure (in sensible ways, not bridge to nowhere ways, though I’m sure there’ll be some of that) and generally governing like, contra Margeret Thatcher, there really is such a thing as society.
I’m sure you differ, and that’s cool man, differ all you want, but you’ll be differing as a tiny minority instead of as the one party in power in DC. Your side had its chance and it blew it, big time. Maybe mine will do the same, we’ll see, but the fact is, the Republicans had a chance to regain the kind of hegemony their party hasn’t seen since the Reconstruction gave way to the Gilded Age, and they let it slip through their fingers without fulfilling a single item of their long-term agenda. No outlawing of abortion (through court appointments, of course), no banning of gay marriage, no utter deregulation of everything (this is the congress that gave us SOX, after all) nothing but war and drugs, and NCLB. Too bad 🙁

So, you are saying that since the Republicans failed to govern like they campaigned to do, that you would rather have Barney Frank and his ilk really govern as he said above that he would? I guess it’s a case of “Thank you, Sir, may I have another?!”
We’ve already seen what your side does with one-party rule. Remember 2003-2007? Thanks to that glorious era we now have the Medicare Pharmaceutical Company Cash Funnel Act, warrantless wiretapping, and record deficits, not to mention that those were the nadir years for the insurgency in Iraq. Could the Dems do any worse? I’m sure you think so, but only time will tell. All I’ve really got to say here is, turnabout’s fair play; live by the ballot, die by the ballot; what’s good for the goose is good for the gander; I can’t think of any more cliches, but you get my drift. I know, it sucks to lose, (my side was losing since I cast my first ballot in 1994 until just two years ago) but you may have to get used to it.
