Two startling surveys segue perfectly into our interview this afternoon with Pete Briscoe about his new book, Belief Matters: Grappling With the Essentials of the Christian Faith.

A new survey just released by the Barna Group indicates than less than half of one percent of young adults age 18 – 23 hold to a biblical worldview, defined as believing that absolute moral truth exists, the Bible is completely accurate, Satan is a real being, a person cannot earn their way into Heaven, Jesus Christ lived a sinless life, and God is the all-powerful, all-knowing Creator of the world who still rules the universe today. Just as disturbing, the Barna survey reveals that only 9% of those who claim to be “Born Again” hold to a worldview that could be considered biblical.

Couple those stats with Trinity College’s just released American Religious Identification Survey. Albert Mohler writes, “By any mesasure, the study reveals an increasing secularization of society. The percentage of Americans identifying as unaffiliated with any religious group or denomination has risen sharply (from 8% in 1990 to 15% in 2008). In fact, the unaffiliated now outnumber all but Catholics and Baptists.”

Persecution: It’s Our Turn

Two important essays today encouraging the faithful to “prepare your minds for action” (1 Peter 1:13) in anticipation of the coming persecution of U. S. Christians:

Dr. Albert Mohler urges us to “take a careful look” at how homosexual activists are responding to the passage of Proposition 8 in California: “[T]he coercive effect is to punish anyone who will not recognize, endorse, or celebrate same-sex marriages.”

Dr. Richard John Neuhaus warns that “we are heading into a greatly intensified public clash of state power and religious freedom,” for which Christians are ill-prepared. His concluding graph is ominous:

Yes, the imminent Kulturkampf, if that is what is in the offing, will require legal talent, political strategizing, relentless persuasion, and all the other means compatible with our constitutional order. Most of all, however, it requires the courage born of faith that the Church really is the Body of Christ through time, a distinct and public community bearing public witness to public truths about the right ordering of life both public and personal. In Catholic history, the cry through the centuries is for libertas ecclesiae—the freedom of the Church to be the Church. For Catholics and others, that freedom now faces a time of severe testing. In the defense of that freedom there have been through the centuries martyrs beyond numbering. We do not know what will happen in the months and years ahead, except that now it may be our turn.

Mohler on Benedict XVI

Dr. Albert Mohler, Jr. is the ninth president of the Southern Bapist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY, the flagship seminary of the Southern Baptist Convention. He writes regularly for Newsweek’s “On Faith” blog and he recently addressed the fundamental differences which remain between Evangelicals and Catholics.

Perhaps the most clarifying moment since his election came last July when the Vatican released the document known as “Responses to Some Questions Regarding Certain Aspects of the Doctrine on the Church” – a document that reasserted the claim that the Roman Catholic Church is the only true church.

I actually appreciated the Pope’s concern. If he is right, we are endangering our souls and the souls of our church members. Yet, I am convinced that he is not right — not right on the papacy, not right on the sacraments, not right on the priesthood, not right on the Gospel, not right in understanding the church.

The Roman Catholic Church believes that evangelicals are in spiritual danger for obstinately and disobediently excluding ourselves from submission to its universal claims and its papacy. Evangelicals are concerned that Catholics are in spiritual danger for their submission to these very claims. We both understand what is at stake.
