  1. “The man thinks he is the Messiah, Savior of the World.”

Respectfully Paul, you don’t know what he thinks, some people label him with such silly proclamations but I find those are mostly the fringe right (Worldview Weekend types), the ones that want to associate escatology and an Obama presidency.

Like I said before quoting scripture and religious phrases is something that all speech writers are well versed at. David Kuo opened my eyes to this idea in his book Tempting Faith.

  2. Sherrie,

He is arrogant because he took the verse out of its context and applied it to his CAMPAIGN when the verse clearly applies to what Jesus did in suffering for sin.

The man thinks he is the Messiah, Savior of the World.

And he still misquoted the verse even from the way you have cited it in the NCV.

  3. You might want to check your facts before you start calling another arrogant. Please consider what Jesus said about how we are to treat others…even our enemies, as it seems you have placed Obama in that catagory.

“23 Let us hold firmly to the hope that we have confessed, because we can trust God to do what he promised”

  4. We all know that this is a common tactic that all politicians use. That is the usage of religious phrases and biblical terms to imply religious knowledge or sympathies. Like when in 2003 when President Bush was ramping up for war and said the phrase “there is power, wonder working power” which we all know comes from the hymn “There is power in the blood”. I am sure that Bush didn’t think that the atonement that Jesus offer through his shed blood to us individually had anything to do with the power that this nation has to start wars. Then again maybe he did.
I am sure a short google search would show more of Bush’s usage and misquotations of scripture in speeches, it’s what speech writers do in a nation the claims to be 80% christian.

  5. Actually, it is an Obama paraphrase of Hebrews 10:23 which says, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.” The words as quoted by Obama appear in NO translation of ANY Bible, which affirms his arrogance that makes him believe he can quote Scripture anyway he pleases to make it fit his point.

The hope referred to in the verse as it actually appears in the Bible is the confident assurance that God will preserve His people through suffering on the basis of the atoning work of His Son, Jesus Christ (Hebrews 10:11-14) making it possible for God’s people to draw near to Him with confidence that they won’t be consumed by Him (Hebrews 10:19-22).

The hope Obama is referring to is for a plurality of votes in his favor on November 4.

  6. The hope that Paul is referring to in this passage is specifically the forgiveness of sin through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I’m pretty sure that Obama wasn’t encouraging us all to hold firmly to our confession in Jesus Christ. Too bad he didn’t study the verse before he quoted it.
