Here’s your sign…
Jess L. Christensen, Institute of Religion director at Utah State University, Logan, Utah. On first hearing, the doctrine that Lucifer and our Lord, Jesus Christ, are brothers may seem surprising to some—especially to those unacquainted with latter-day revelations. But both the scriptures and the prophets affirm that Jesus Christ and Lucifer are indeed offspring of our Heavenly Father and, therefore, spirit brothers. Jesus Christ was with the Father from the beginning. Lucifer, too, was an angel “who was in authority in the presence of God,” a “son of the morning.” (See Isa. 14:12; D&C 76:25–27.) Both Jesus and Lucifer were strong leaders with great knowledge and influence. But as the Firstborn of the Father, Jesus was Lucifer’s older brother. (See Col. 1:15; D&C 93:21.)

While I am not thinking of converting to Mormanism, their concept of Jesus and Satan being brothers makes sense of Revelation 12. It sounds like Jesus and his angels fought with Satan and his and Jesus won the battle and cast Satan OUT OF HEAVEN……….HE HAD TO BE THERE TO BE CAST OUT…………..HOW DID HE GET THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE? IT ALSO SOUNDS LIKE THE DEVIL IS IN THE WORLD AND ANXIOUS TO MAKE MINCEMEAT OF US WHO HAVE A TESTIMONY OF GOD……………IF WE WEAKEN.
Liz,
Your answer doesn’t make sense and it isn’t verifiable in the Bible. When you say Satan can’t come to earth, the Bible clearly teaches he is already here. He is the god of this world and he walks about as a roaring Lion seeking whom he may devour.
It also doesn’t make sense that we were all God’s spirit children prior to our being born on earth. You have just nailed the heresy in the Mormon teaching and given the answer to why Mitt Romney’s Jesus isn’t Christianity’s Jesus. You view Jesus as just another one of God’s spirit children.
This isn’t the way the Bible presents Jesus to us: John 1:1-14; Hebrews 1:1-3; Colossians 1:15-18, to name a few. Your Jesus isn’t the Jesus of the Bible who is co-eternal with the Father, begotten not made.
AMEN LIZ..I loved your answer. You pay attention VERY WELL.

I have to admit that as a doctrinal question, this particular aspect of the Mormon-Protestant disagreement seems like kind of a minor one. It certainly shouldn’t be the cause of the kind of anti-Mormon phobia described in another post on this website.
I would think Evangelicals would rather focus on the historical record of Mormon history in refuting the LDS Church. Focusing on doctrine just points out the similarities of the two groups.
Is it surprising to believe that in the beginning, before God created the world, that we lived as spirits in his presence? And that there would be differences in personalities just like we are here now? Who of us now, having children, can say that we are all alike with the same desires and make the same choices? Just as we see manifest today–both followers and opponents of Jesus Christ–we can understand that God’s children existed in heaven before we came to earth, and that Satan was just one of those siblings of the Savior. He, however, because of his choices in heaven, will never be able to come to earth. This makes total sense and is verifiable in the Bible.
This brings clarity to it! Evidently all Satan needs to do is to, 1. come to himself, 2. arise and go to the father, 3. confess “Father I have sinned and am no more worthy”…, and surely there will be a robe, ring, fatted calf, and making merry on his behalf.
