Thanks for the thoughtful response, I agree with you. The way that the Right says is the only way to fight abortion is a pipe dream. Right now we have 7 of the 9 justices that were appointed by Republicans. Outlawing it is the perfect solution but is it the only solution? Politicians love us to think so. This is the part that is so tragic, is the lives of babies is being used as a tool to get people voted in office. Many of which don’t seem to care at all about abortion as much as they do their other political agenda’s but come campaign time they are “PRO-LIFE”. I think the 95-10 plan is practical, it is effective and can bring both sides together on a very sticky issue. Not only that, but I think it advances the Kingdom of God greater than it does legislating our morals on an immoral society.

Jeff, it was the 95-10 initiative that finally helped me make my decision to vote for Obama.
Obama’s position on abortion was one of the big sticking points for me. I had to wrestle with the issue of whether it was enough to simply want to reduce the number of abortions rather than make it illegal. The fact that abortions actually went down during the Clinton administration and that the Democrats have a plan to see abortions vastly decrease simply felt more realistic to me than hoping for Supreme Court changes and then hoping that Supreme Court would outlaw abortion and then hoping that another SC wouldn’t overtturn it down the road (ironically, I was against hope in my vote for Obama on this point.) Reducing abortions is not what I feel is the best answer, but it is the most realistic answer–and I believe that if the nation addresses the needs of single mothers and the Church does the job of continuing to change hearts, then we will begin to see abortions not only decrease but life be championed, which is a bigger victory than simply writing legislation that directs actions rather than changes hearts.
I’ve wrestled with the same questions you’ve asked, but have always come away strongly against abortion even in those extreme examples. The fact is that few rapes result in conception; and even if it did happen, I believe that God’s soveriegnty means that the horrible act of rape can result in a positive consequence of a life being formed.
The question of a birth risking a mother’s life is almost moot. Any pregnant mother I’ve met has always placed the well-being of a child above her own. What mother would say to kill the child to spare her own life?
Are there extreme examples where an abortion may be necessary? It’s possible, but I think they are rare. And in those cases I would leave it up to prayer and trust in God with the understanding that even if the wrong decision is made, God is God of grace who can forgive that.
In another, possibly futile, attempt to dialog I am going to ask a question or two. While I don’t support Obama’s position on abortion and I think abortion should be avoided at all costs, do you think that abortion should be outlawed in every case? This includes rape and it includes when the mother’s life is at stake. Should the baby be saved at the cost of the mother? I recognize these are not the majority of abortions, but I also realize that the issue of abortion is a deep one with many facets. Beyond that, how does overturning Roe help anything knowing that the decision goes in the hands of the states?

I earnestly pray he does…nations rarely rise above their leaders…but, we can pray that God grants our HOPE with a CHANGE in the heart of our highest elected official and all those he leads.
While we hear stories of rescue from time to time…we will never know how many little ones never made it through the greatest holocost of all time.
