My colleague Hugh Hewitt wrote the book (literally) on getting Mitt Romney elected. Hugh was all too happy to join the bandwagon of some in the MSM who are prophesying the demise of Huckabee based on a story Good Morning America will carry on Wednesday morning about a Missouri woman who says she will stop at nothing to keep Huckabee from being elected president because he released a man from prison who went on to rape and murder her daughter. Hugh says in part,
Given all the hits Huckabee has taken in the last four days, the question becomes: Where will the folks who drop him move their allegiances? To the collapsed campaign of Fred? to the long-and-sdeeply-disliked-by-party-regulars McCain? To Rudy? The likeliest landing zone is Team Romney, though making the sale to the undecideds and the newly detached depends a lot on The Speech.
Four days, Hugh? Mike Huckabee is surging in the polls after trailing for MONTHS and you are suggesting he should throw in the towel after FOUR DAYS of relentless attacks from the candidates he has surprised by passing them in the polls, inlcuding your man Mitt?
And what of your musing about to which candidate “the folks who drop him” will move their allegiances? Huckabee has emerged as a leading tier one candidate without any top level endorsements. Who exactly is there to drop him, besides the rank and file conservatives who believed in him when their conservative leaders were panning him?
I still heart Huckabee regardless of whatever the MSM throws at him. I am frankly surprised to see my friend Hugh Hewitt, whom I respect greatly, joining the MSM fray on this one.
