Fr. Gregory Jensen on Wisconsin’s Clergy Mandatory Reporter Act

On August 22, Paul spoke with Fr. Gregory Jensen about pending legislation in Wisconsin which would require clergy to violate the trust with penitents by requiring them to report to the state certain confessions they hear.

“As in other states, clergy in Wisconsin are mandated reporters of suspected cases of child abuse or mistreatment. If passed the Clergy Mandatory Reporting Act would, according to one of the bill’s co-sponsors, require “that members of the clergy report any instances of child abuse, including sexual abuse, ending the loophole of unjust cover-ups and misreporting currently occurring in our state.” The “loophole” referred to is the priest-penitent privilege that exempts clergy from reporting abuse revealed solely in confession (“the seal of confession”).”

You Are Here: “A Story of Hope in the Darkest of Times”

GUEST: Peter Gentile, Producer of You Are Here

When 38 planes carrying 6,500 individuals arrived at Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11, the eastern-most point of North America, the small Canadian town came together to host a group of strangers who would leave as family.

“7,000 people showed up in a community of 9,000 and stayed for four days.”

The people of Gander showcased the best in humanity. They united together as a community to not only give these strangers a place to stay, but to welcome them with love and generosity as if their unexpected visit had been joyously anticipated.

“They treated us like welcomed, invited guests,” said passenger Kevin Jung. “And I kept thinking, ‘We’re not guests!’ Guests are invited; we just fell out of the sky into their town.”

“You Are Here,” from award-winning producer Peter Gentile, will show in nearly 800 U.S. movie theaters as a one-night event on September 11, 2019.

WSJ: Americans Have Shifted Dramatically on What Values Matter Most

  • Views varied sharply by age. Among people 55 and older, for example, nearly 80% said patriotism was very important, compared with 42% of those ages 18-38—the millennial generation and older members of Gen-Z. Two-thirds of the older group cited religion as very important, compared with fewer than one-third of the younger group.
  • “There’s an emerging America where issues like children, religion and patriotism are far less important. And in America, it’s the emerging generation that calls the shots about where the country is headed,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducted the survey with Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt.

NYT: A Love Letter to Neighborhood Bookshops

  • “Amazon has demonstrated no gift for creating anything like such a store, and that’s in part because independent bookstores don’t operate according to the normal rules of capitalism. They aren’t trying to beat each other. They aren’t even trying to beat Amazon. They’re creating communities — cozy places to beat the heat or come in from the cold. An independent bookstore is a place where someone comes around the register as soon as you walk in the door and says, “You have to read this; it has your name all over it!”

“…Western society today is increasingly eager to cut itself off from both its Judeo-Christian and Greco-Roman roots. America’s elite universities, and increasingly non-elite ones, have rapidly jettisoned requirements for courses in Western thought…”

“If the country is preparing to enter a type of second Dark Ages devoid of classical thought, another unlikely group of people is arising to preserve the Great Books of the Western intellectual tradition: conservative evangelical Christians.”

“It has been the Presbyterians and other Calvinists who have lit the way in classical Christian education.”
