Soldiers of the First World War during the 1914 Christmas Truce

On Wednesday, December 11th Paul was joined by noted historian David Pietrusza for a fascinating conversation about the 1914 Christmas Truce during WWI. Below is the audio of their conversation in three parts:

The Christmas Truce has become one of the most famous and mythologised events of the First World War. But what was the real story behind the truce? Why did it happen and did British and German soldiers really play football in no-man’s land?

Historian David Pietrusza, author of TR’s Last War: Theodore Roosevelt, The Great War, and a Journey of Triumph and Tragedy, joins Paul to discuss one of the most moving events in the history of modern warfare. We also have archival audio of men who were actually part of the famed 1914 Christmas truce from Britain’s Imperial War Museum.
