Seeing as the year’s a little over half over, I figure you can never go wrong with a list showcasing some of the best pieces of music released in the past seven months. So look these songs up if you wish, and watch the quality of your life increase greatly. Life’s more than politics, y’know?
- White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes
- Moorestown by Sun Kil Moon
- Look At You by My Morning Jacket (really, the whole Evil Urges album could go here)
- Cape Canaveral by Conor Oberst
- 666: The Coming of the New World Government by Apollo Sunshine (don’t let the title scare you)
- The Birthday Wars by Oxford Collapse
- The Gardener by The Tallest Man On Earth
- Carolina Drama by The Raconteurs
- Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!! by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
- Valentine by Derek Webb & Sandra McCracken
- Burnin’ Up by Jonas Brothers
- 7 Things by Miley Cyrus
Happy listening!
I admit it! I’ve become an old fogie! “I don’t know much about art, but I know what I like!” I have no idea who most of these artists are. If it ain’t Christian, old-time rock ‘n roll (pre-1990), or smooth jazz, I’m pretty much not interested.
Although, I gotta admit, I did enjoy listening to the hip-hop stylings of Shai Linne. I have never heard sound doctrine sound so hip!
Three-fourths of the WORLD are in the dark on these songs. This is why we make lists.
Joel,
I will be looking forward to the end of year “Joel’s Top 40”. I have to admit though I am completely in the dark on most of those songs. I am either too old or too entrench in the Christian subculture.
oh yeah, and “Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong With That” by Robert Randolph and the Family Band!
I’d like to add a few (I think these are within the last 12 months):
“Broken” by Lifehouse
“Adore, Adore” by Yoav
“15 Step” by Radiohead
“The Pretender” by Foo Fighters
“Stop This Train” by John Mayer
“Breathe (2AM)” by Anna Nalick
“Love Song” by Sara Bareilles
“Nicest Thing” by Kate Nash
I didn’t even know who most of these people were a month ago. That’s what a subscription to Paste Magazine does to you.
And yes, “See You Again” is one of the greatest songs ever written in human history. Forget King David, I’d take Miley over him any day.
I don’t get any of it…I just go for Bach and make up my own words…imagination…how could we live without it…*: ) Joel…you’re way over my head.!
C’mon Joel – admit it – you’re a closet Hannah Montana fan… You probably own “Achy Breaky Heart” by her dad, too… 😉
I’m glad you caught my sarcasm.
No person who claims to enjoy music would put those two songs on any best of list. Maybe the Best of Cruddy Music.
Jonas Brothers?? Miley Cyrus???
The title of this entry needs to be changed.
