Yes, Virginia, there is a media bias against orthodox Christianity (especially at Christmas and Easter), but it was tempered somewhat this year\u00a0by the publication of strongly theological content in\u00a0opinion pieces in the New York Times<\/a> and Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Granted the pieces were written by conservatives with ties to Ronald Reagan<\/a> and George W. Bush<\/a>, but those connections do not diminish from the fact that newspapers widely reputed for their anti-conservative bias published the pieces. In fact, those connections ought to have made it less likely the pieces would be published, in light of\u00a0conservative portrayals of the main stream media as hopelessly biased.<\/p>\n

From Michael Gerson in the Washington Post:<\/a><\/p>\n

Modern people, surrounded by violence and oppression, presented with morally conflicted choices, do not need an ethical system. They need hope. And that sets a limit on our own effort. \u201cA prison cell like this,\u201d Bonhoeffer wrote<\/a>, \u201cis a good analogy for Advent; one waits, hopes, does this or that \u2014 ultimately negligible things \u2014 the door is locked and can only be opened from the outside.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the Christian view, the door was swung open by the incarnation, by a God who somehow became a defenseless child, a refugee, a teacher of good, a victim of injustice, left alone, tired, in doubt, to face a humiliating death. A God who \u2014 strangely, paradoxically, mysteriously \u2014 at the end felt abandoned by God. A God on our side. \u201cGod wants to always be with us,\u201d\u00a0Bonhoeffer said<\/a>, \u201cwherever we may be \u2014 in our sin, in our suffering and death. We are no longer alone: God is with us. We are no longer homeless; a bit of the eternal home itself has moved unto us.\u201d<\/p>\n

This, despite all our fears and doubts, is Christmas: a God secretly revealed as love.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
