{"id":22,"date":"2007-03-10T20:02:54","date_gmt":"2007-03-11T01:02:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/godandculture.wordpress.com\/2007\/03\/11\/on-purgatory\/"},"modified":"2007-03-10T20:02:54","modified_gmt":"2007-03-11T01:02:54","slug":"on-purgatory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.godandculture.com\/blog\/on-purgatory","title":{"rendered":"On Purgatory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Joe called The Paul Edwards Program on Friday to ask where Catholics get their support for purgatory.\u00a0 I surmised in response that the idea of an intermediate state for the purging of sins must come from\u00a0 extra-biblical sources like tradition, the Church Fathers, and\/or the Magisterium, since there is certainly no\u00a0Scriptural support for such a teaching.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A friend had me consult <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1565071077?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=onthewordradi-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1565071077\">The Gospel According to Rome<\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" width=\"1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=onthewordradi-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1565071077\" height=\"1\" style=\"border:medium none;margin:0;\" \/>\u00a0by James G. McCarthy which points to the apocryphal book of Second Maccabees as the source Catholics use to support a belief in purgatory.\u00a0 Seems there is a story there about a battle,\u00a0a lot\u00a0of people being killed, and the survivors sending off a\u00a0penitential\u00a0monetary offering to secure the souls of those killed.\u00a0 McCarthy points out how one really has to twist the exegesis to arrive at a defense of purgatory in this passage.\u00a0One could just as easily arrive at the conclusion that the offering was one of thanksgiving for the living.
