Famed Crystal Cathedral reopens as grand Catholic Church after $77M makeover

TODAY’S GUEST: Paul is joined today by Robert A. Schuller (son of Robert H. Schuller) for his perspective on the re-dedication of the Crystal Cathedral as Christ Cathedral by the Catholic Archdiocese of Orange County, California. After serving alongside his father, Dr. Schuller served as senior pastor of the Crystal Cathedral from 2006-2008.
- Pope blesses
- Relics of “martyrs and saints” interred in altar
- “…from as far away as Vietnam and South Korea…”
- Including unidentified relic of Pope John Paul II
- Saint John Paul II’s blood on a piece of cloth venerated in Orange County in November 2018
- Martin Luther: “Oh, what a terrible and heavy reckoning those bishops will have to give who permit this devilish deceit and profit by it. They should be the first to prevent it and yet they regard it all as a godly and holy thing. They do not see that the devil is behind it all, to strengthen greed, to create a false and fictitious faith, to weaken the parish churches, to multiply taverns and harlotry, to lose money and working time to no purpose, and to lead ordinary people by the nose. If they had read Scripture as well as the damnable canon law, they would know how to deal with this matter! “
- Name change: Christ Cathedral
- 1,000 pound crucifix hangs over altar
- “The Diocese purchased this architecturally significant campus, blessed and enthusiastically supported by [Robert] Schuller.”
- Robert Schuller, Sr. personally pleaded with bankruptcy judge to allow sale “…to continue the Christian legacy of the campus.”

Paul-
Your interview w Dr. Schuller was awesome. Your disagreement w him near the end was a model of how people of good will can express points of view which genuinely differ, while most of their beliefs are congruent.
One quibble: a person does not “go to their dying grave”. They go to their dying day or dying breath, OR, they go to their grave–their IS no dying grave.
However, the theological tennis match btw you was thrilling to hear, and astoundingly you were both right! (A belief I will carry to my dying grave.)
