Justin Taylor on Rob Bell

Over this past weekend Justin Taylor set the Internet on fire when he questioned whether or not Rob Bell has come out as a Universalist in his forthcoming book, Love Wins.

I spoke with Justin Taylor today on The Paul Edwards Program

  1. All Bell is doing is asking questions; there is no way to conclude that he is a universalist from those questions. If anything, it sounds like he might be saying we dont know who is going to Heaven, or possibly more people are going to Heaven than what we think.

  2. Sounds like Rob is at least leaning the universalist direction if he has not made the leap fully. The big problems with so-called “Christian” universalism is that it robs God of his attributes of holiness and justice. It totally ignores all the passages on the wrath of God and that in order for God to be “good” and “loving,” He must in fact be holy and just by executing His wrath.

The real good news is that He did what only He could do. He satisfied His perfect wrath by sacrificing His own Son for the elect Does this mean that everyone will be saved? The Bible clearly teaches that this is not the case.

We would all do well to read Jonathan Edwards magnificent sermon “Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God” and see that this doting grandfatherly image we Americans have painted as our god has more in common with Santa Claus than the God of the Bible. That “god” and Santa Claus are fictitious and worshiping that “god” is nothing more than idolatry.
