Dr. A. V. Henderson on The Church, Then and Now

Dr. A. V. Henderson, former pastor of the Temple Baptist Church of Detroit (1975 – 1984) died on December 28, 2015 at the age of 96.

Take one and a half minutes to listen to his analysis of the church situation today. This is from a message to Bible college students in May 2015.

  1. I was a member of Temple Baptist in Detroit when I was young. Dr Henderson was a MASSIVE man in my life. He was a great man and I was LUCKY to be baptized by him. Very missed because he literally gave me chills every Sunday and Wednesdays. Thank you Dr AV Henderson. Dan Ribitsch

  2. Only a handful of men from the days of the flesh I will rejoice in a renewed fellowship with …. the Doc is at the top of my list! His life, his ministry can be equated to an invitation quote from his pulpit. … “do it now, do it right now!”
    Consistent all the way through!
As another list member, Sturgis, left us with in one of his last messages to his supporters was quoted from the sacred page… “even so, come Lord Jesus”!
Again, consistent all the way through!
And one final list member quotation of mention, Oliver B, “Father, save the soul nearest hell, in Jesus name”!
As a small hub in the vehicle of faith, I have been overly blessed to have had a roll with these and a few others, undeserved but true.
Such is the Grace of my heavenly Father!

Thank you Paul for this memory, thank you Doc for teaching me guts, and most importantly, thank you Lord for releasing my chains and setting my heart free!

Only a sinner, saved by grace!!!!

  3. Thank you for this post…It’s refreshing that this recording came from the recent past and not the distant past. Dr. Henderson preached and lived with a passion that should remind God’s church of what a committed life can accomplish. Strange as it may seem, this message could have been from a recording from the 1980;s or before…His methodology, mission and message never changed. Some may call that old fashioned, but in the retrospect of examining Dr. Henderson’s 76 plus years of ministry, I think most would call that consistent and courageous. He always confronted culture rather than conceding to it. He called the unbeliever to repent and believer to a life of separation from sin…I thought we were all supposed to do that! Thank you Dr. Henderson for beginning your messages with Scripture and illustrating for all to understand, rather than beginning with illustration and hoping to find scripture to prove a point. Thank you for calling those messages SERMONS and not TALKS, and for always inviting others to join with Christ as we all were once invited; through a public confession of Him. Thank you for blazing a trail that burned bright enough for anyone to follow. You were a “mega-man” of God and example to us all.
