Defend Us from Ourselves

“At every point in this educational process, we are told that [faith] is ridiculous, and their arguments sound so good it is hard not to fall into them. Dear Lord, please give the people like me who don’t have the brains to cope with that, please give us some kind of weapon, not to defend us from them but to defend us from ourselves after they have got through with us.”

~ Flannery O’Connor, A Prayer Journal

The enemy which threatens your faith is not the atheist or agnostic professor or media personality. The convincing arguments of the secularists aren’t what you must defend against. It is your propensity to acquiesce to those arguments because you have not given the word of God an equal place in the argument from which you need defending. “Take heed to thyself…” 1 Timothy 4:16

The “weapon” God gives to us to defend us against our own propensity to doubt Him is His own word – the sword of the Spirit – and the shield of faith whereby we quench all the fiery darts of the evil one. “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”  Romans 10:17

If you desire faith, have faith. “Be not faithless, but believing.” John 20:27

  1. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.

    I well recall one of your favorites to lead the congregation in;

    •My faith has found a resting place,
    Not in device nor creed;
    I trust the Ever-living One,
    His wounds for me shall plead.
    •I need no other argument,
    I need no other plea;
    It is enough that Jesus died,
    And that He died for me.

    And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.
    For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified
